Magic musical «conversation» at Merdø

Bjørn Eidsvåg’s career started in the early 70’s, and his concert at the idyllic island of Merdø Wednesday afternoon, shows that he is one of the most renowned and best selling Norwegian artists. At the island he created an idyllic time in the sun for the hundreds of people who came to listen to his songs.

In the glimmered sunlight of the sea, Bjørn Eidsvåg sets the mood by starting with his song «Vertigo» from the album «Alt du vil ha» (1990). The song is a spiritual recount of a young man whose life has no balance. He’s seeking answers from his dreams, but it seems there is an omen of death that has surrounded him. The song brings the audience to listen quite carefully to the artist’s message.

The talented crew around Bjørn Eidsvåg consists of David Wallumrød behind the keyboard, Bjørn Holm playing the bass, Anders Engen playing the drums, and last, but not least the guitarist, Kjetil Steensnæs – who is also part of the trio Darling West playing the Canal Street main stage Thursday 27th of July.

Bjørn Eidsvåg’s career has always consisted of extensive touring, up to as many as 80 per year, and this time it was Merdø’s turn to view the artist live. Everybody who came had an experience they would not soon forget about. Eidsvåg had a connection with the audience which was candid, and the mood that set over the historical port of Merdø, cannot be described as anything other than mellow, charged with energy and brilliant.

Eidsvåg has in his lyrics and performances an aspiration to communicate with his listeners. In 2010 he won an honorary award on account of the lyrics he has written. The lyrics from the songs he played at Merdø gave reason to the deserved award. The ‘unplugged’ concert gave chills and goosebumps on several occasions, and you could hear the crowd silently humming away in their seats. Huge hits like «Shalala», «Skyfri himmel» and «Bare ein mann» got people singing in southern harmony with Bjørn Eidsvåg.

With the song «På leit» (searching), the artist told the audience he was in shock to find out how little he knew after studying theology. Or as his guitarist Kjetil Steensnæs explains music from an artists point of view in an interview with a Norwegian newspaper: «It’s the nerve in the music and the experience we are constantly chasing. Greatness lies in the moments something magical happens.»

The audience gave the artist and his band standing ovations after hearing several hit songs. It may seem as though Bjørn Eidsvåg truly found what he was searching for, his ability to mesmerize an audience with his lyrics and his tunes.

Pure magic.
